PARENTS OF WILLIAMSONS CHAPEL SUNDAY SCHOOL

we need your help!  In most cases, our Sunday classes are taught by one adult, with hall monitors floating to see if they need extra help.  If on a Sunday morning you arrive with your child and find that the classroom is full and the teacher is alone, offer to stay and help.  It will give you an opportunity to meet the other children in your child’s class and you become the hands and feet of Christ as you help that teacher have the best classroom experience possible.  If each parent would offer to be the helping hand on any given Sunday, it would mean volunteering two to three times a year.  There are sign up sheets at each door…as we pledge to be good stewards this Sunday, volunteer just as a helper in one of our children’s classrooms.  Many thanks!

FROM THE FINANCE OFFICE

THINGS TO CONSIDER FOR YOUR END OF YEAR GIVING

With only a few weeks left in 2008, many of us will be making those last minute contributions before the end of the year.  Please note that the IRS states that a contribution received in a particular year can only be claimed as a deduction in that year.  The only exception is at year end if a contribution is mailed, dated, and postmarked in December but the church receives it in January, then and only then can that contribution be claimed as a deduction in the previous year.

Example #1:  Mr. Smith writes a check for $100 on December 31, 2008.  He drops the check by the church office on January 2, 2009.  This contribution is not deductible in 2008, since the church did not receive this check until 2009.

Example #2:  Mrs. Jones writes a check on January 2, 2009, but predates this check December 31, 2008.  She personally delivers the check to the church on January 2, 2009.  Even though this check is dated in 2008, Mrs. Jones cannot claim this as a charitable deduction on her taxes in 2008 since the church did not receive the check until 2009.

Example #3:  Miss Wesson writes a check on December 29, 2008.  She promptly puts the check in the mail and it is postmarked December 29, 2008.  The church receives the check on January 2, 2009.  Miss Desk may claim this as a charitable deduction on her 2008 tax return since it was written, mailed, and postmarked in 2008.  In this case the date the church receives the contribution does not matter, since it was mailed and postmarked in the previous year.

Also, please remember that if you are donating stock for the year 2008, this needs to be done as soon as possible since it takes a few weeks to transfer. If you need information regarding stock transfers, please call Terri Pruett in the church office.

Please note that the church office will close on December 23, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. and will reopen on January 5, 2009 at 9:00 a.m.  Please keep these dates in mind as you make your final contributions for 2008.

If you have any questions, please do hesitate to contact Terri Pruett.

ANGELS ARE AVAILABLE THIS WEEKEND!!!

Saturday:
Pick up your angel from the table in the Narthex.

Sunday:
Pick up your angelfrom the tree in the Fellowship Hall

Children from the Mooresville area and from the gulf region of Texas are available for the congregation to “adopt.” Select your angel (or angels) from the table in the Narthex on Saturday or from the tree in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday and register your angel(s) with a volunteer standing nearby. Return your gifts to the Fellowship Hall between Wednesday, December 3 and Sunday, December 7. If you have questions, please contact Ellen Deese at 704-664-6249 or Jena Gallagher at 704-662-9145, or email angeltree.wcumc@gmail.com.

Again this year, Williamson’s Chapel and other churches in Mooresville are partnering with the Mooresville Christian Mission in their Christmas Angel program. The Mission will work with local schools and other agencies to qualify each recipient, verify need and avoid duplicate assistance. In Texas, we are coordinating our efforts through the United Methodist conference.

MOORESVILLE AREA THANKSGIVING DINNER!

The 4th annual Mooresville Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be held on Thanksgiving Day, to provide a holiday meal and fellowship time for those in need.  Area churches, the Mooresville Christian Mission, the Mooresville Soup Kitchen,  area businesses and individual contributors are working together to sponsor this event.

As many know, the Williamson’s Chapel Singles ministry started this 4 years ago and the WCUMC congregation have been integral supporters through the years, in multiple ways. In these economic times, we expect more demand than ever and hope everyone will consider a donation to support this. Due to the expected need, we have significantly raised our goal to whatever we can afford, as many as 2000 meals.

Individual donations can be mailed to
Mooresville Christian Mission
PO Box 62
Mooresville, NC 28115.
Please indicate for Thanksgiving Dinner on your check.  100% of your donation is used to fund this event.  There are no administrative costs!

The dinner will be held at the First Baptist Church, 150 South Church Street in downtown Mooresville from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, November 27, 2008.  Sit down dining, carry out, and home delivery (homebound and those without transportation only) will be offered in a restaurant style setting.
This year, to better serve the area, we have 3 additional remote sites providing pick-up and/or delivery at: St. Paul UMC (Troutman), Vanderburg UMC (Shepherds Community, Hwy. 115/21), and The Cove (Langtree Rd, off exit 33).

If you want to volunteer, or for more information, please visit our website for more information: www.mooresvillethanksgiving.org. Volunteer slots will fill up quickly so volunteer early.

THE MONTHLY MISSION EMPHASIS FOR NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER

As we continue to seek to be the hands and feet of Christ in our community and world, the Outreach Team decided the best way to be effective in our Monthly Missional Giving is to group similar missions together and honor them for multiple months, ie November and December.  After December we will take all monies and divide them equally among those missions.  This is going to facilitate honoring more missions throughout the course of the year and hopefully be able to make a bigger impact for all. Our focus for November and December is local Agencies.

MOORESVILLE CHRISTIAN MISSION
Mooresville Christian Mission is our local organization dedicated to serving multiple needs of those who are living in poverty in our community. Clients are pre-qualified based on income and then allowed to use services as necessary. Services include clothing, furniture, food pantry, and temporary help with electric or medical bills.

HEALTHREACH CLINIC
The HealthReach Clinic provides quality health care to the people in our community who have no other health care options. Offers no-cost medical, dental, pharmaceutical, and preventive-care services in the Clinic and through referrals to appropriate organizations.

FIFTH STREET MINISTRIES
Fifth Street Ministries is a non-profit organization designed to help meet the needs of the impoverished, the homeless, the sick, the abused. Having been in operation since 1990, thousands have passed through their doors in search of shelter, food, clothing, medical and dental care, or a place of safety. Most have been in need of support, encouragement, and nurturing, for by the time they reach their doorstep, it's as though the weight of the world is on their shoulders.

Journey To The Shack

Beginning next weekend, November 29-30 we will celebrate the season of Advent with a new worship series "Journey to The Shack". This is a great time to invite people to worship.  More folks are more open to come to church at Christmastime than any other, and to maximize this opportunity, we will be using the very popular book, The Shack, to relate to the story of Jesus’ birth. This book has sparked a great interest in God and the way God deals with the tremendous pain of our world.  This series will help us get reconnected to the God who came long ago to a shack in Bethlehem and still comes to us today.
