History of Williamson's Chapel United Methodist Church

Williamson’s Chapel was organized at the Red Hill School early in 1912 as a mission. Mr. Tom Williamson donated land, and soon a white frame church was built. This building was located on Brawley School Road. The cemetery remains at this site. The first pastor, Rev. Ebenezer Myers, promoted the building of the church, and music was provided by Miss Ethel Bost, who later became a missionary to Japan.

Worship was held in the frame church until 1938, when this original building was replaced by a brick structure. Rev. JO Cox directed the building program and ministered to Williamson’s Chapel, Rocky Mount, and McKendree churches as a circuit. At various times, other charge assignments have included Fairview, Davidson, Huntersville, Centenary, Triplett, and Jones Memorial United Methodist Churches.

With the coming of Lake Norman, a move was necessary. Duke Power bought the church property and provided land for a new church at our present site. On October 8, 1961, groundbreaking ceremonies were held and construction was begun. The first worship service in the new church took place on August 5, 1962, under the direction of Rev. L.E. Paschal. The church was dedicated on June 20, 1971.

Construction on the new Fellowship Center began in 1998. A master plan was also completed showing the proposal of a new sanctuary, educational space, and a family life center.

God has richly blessed Williamson’s Chapel United Methodist Church throughout the years and we are excited about the blessing yet to be revealed.
